Throwing a Bridal Shower (NOT a Bachelorette Party)

By filbertholmes at 2012-11-18 22:42:10
There are some brides who want to hit the clubs (male strip and otherwise) and there are brides who just want to relax with the people they love in anticipation of the BIG DAY. And, of course, there are brides who wish to do both. But whether you are in the position of planning a bridal shower because your friend is opposed to bachelorette parties or because she wants to include the older women in her life, this isn’t a task to take lightly. In addition to providing relevant entertainment, you’ll need to contact a party linen rental company to make sure you have the critical table décor, linens, and chair covers you need to make the event truly memorable. Here are some ideas for bridal showers to get you started, including tips for the décor—wine-themed table runners or origami table linen-- and what to serve your guests.

The Wine Bottling Party
Of course, alcohol acts as the great social lubricant, but it can also be incorporated into the wedding preparations as well. Vineyards and wine distribution centers often provide customized wine labels for major events, and allow clients and guests to bottle the wine themselves. While the bride and groom should cover the cost of the wine itself, you can cover the decorations, the music, and refreshments. Order wine-themed table linen printed with grapes or wine glasses. You can also ask for table runners in deep maroon. Serve wine (provided by the establishment; it’s only polite) and cheese, antipasti, grapes, and other delicious hors d’oeuvres and have fun filling, corking, and sealing the bottles.

The Origami Party
Though the practice may be more popular in America than it is in Japan, folding one thousand paper cranes is becoming a popular wedding tradition, with beautiful results. Whether or not a member of the couple is Japanese, folding paper cranes can be a fun activity, particularly if you wish to involve children over the age of seven. If nothing else, it makes the process go by more quickly than expecting the couple to do it themselves! To decorate, ask your party linen rentals supplier for origami-themed linens, and chair covers that are padded—people will want to sit down while performing this time-consuming activity. Set up an assembly line, with the more experienced folders taking on the final steps. Serve sushi, edamame, and other chopstick-friendly treats.

The Decorating Party
If the couple has decided to go with a low-budget wedding, more power to them. Decorating the reception area doesn’t need to be done all at once; you can prepare all party linen rentals, including the napkins, linens, and chair covers, well in advance of the event itself. This party differs from the others; instead of providing a well-decorated area in advance, you’ll be asking your guests themselves to decorate! Given the import of the event, it’s probably best to serve refreshments after the work is done. You don’t want people spilling tartar sauce on the customized table runners, or handling the silver with sticky fingers. Play music while they decorate, but if it’s the night before the wedding, treat them to something filling, but short on sodium and fat, like a sandwich platter or veggies and dip. Keep alcohol to a minimum, as anyone who wants to drink the night before the wedding will likely choose to go elsewhere. Nobody likes to feel bloated during the nuptials. Party on.
